The program, developed by Open Communities LLC and the YWCA of Greater Trenton, helps local anti-racism activist committees learn how to fight racism effectively in their communities. The program features lecture-based learning from the leaders of Open Communities, Eric Dobson and Emilio Panasci, and features the experiences of community leaders and organizers working to improve race relations in Hightstown, Pennsauken, and Trenton. We shot the interviews with the community leaders, the lecture sequences with Eric and Emilio, and packaged the entire program into an interactive DVD set separated into sequential chapters. We also coordinated production and delivery of the DVDs. We can do this for your organization’s training programs as well. You can watch this promotional video with Jose Hernandez, executive director of the YWCA, that describes the DVD set.

We continue our production of NJ Spotlight roundtable videos with “The Growing Conflict over Smart Growth,” recorded at the Trenton Masonic Temple,April 13, 2012. If New Jersey is ever going to embrace smart growth, advocates and stakeholders are first going to have to agree as to what it is — and isn’t. The Christie administration isn’t waiting. It’s overhauling the State Plan and is about to adopt a new investment strategy that it claims will spur economic growth while preserving New Jersey’s few remaining open spaces and farmland. Can the administration’s vision prevail? That’s just one of the topics that was explored at the NJ Spotlight Roundtable: The Growing Conflict Over Smart Growth. Moderator: Tom Johnson, environment editor and co-founder of NJ Spotlight. Panelists: Dan Kennedy, Deputy Director, Office for Planning Advocacy, Business Action Center, Department of State Eileen Swan, former Executive Director, Highlands Council Peter Kasabach, Executive Director, New Jersey Future Robert Antonicello, Executive Director, Jersey City Redevelopment Agency John Weingart, Associate Director, Eagleton Institute of Politics, Rutgers University To purchase a DVD recording of this seminar, please visit our online store.
Shulman was a 1944 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy — one of just fifty Jewish midshipmen commissioned in his class during World War II.

In the Pacific, Lt. Shulman’s destroyer survived both a typhoon and a Japanese kamikaze aircraft attack.

After leaving the U.S. Navy and returning to civilian life, he volunteered to help the Haganah, the paramilitary force of the Jewish Agency for Palestine headed by David Ben-Gurion. Shulman had been introduced to Ben-Gurion by his mother, who was an executive with Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America. Working in New York City, he helped to buy surplus warships for the Haganah s clandestine sealift that brought Holocaust survivors from Europe to Palestine.

In early 1948 Ben-Gurion called the 25-year-old Shulman to Israel to set up an academy to train officers and NCOs to man ships of Israel s fledgling navy, which at that point only had the refugee vessels.

Beginning with almost no assets, within three months, now-Kvarnit (Commander) Shulman took the Israeli squadron into action against enemy ships, and even against one vessel fighting with Israeli forces. After Israel won its independence most of the 1,200 American and Canadian volunteers went home. Shulman, with his wife and infant son, remained in Israel, settling in Haifa, which would be their home for the next forty years.

After Shulman died in 1994, a stained glass window was dedicated in his memory at the U.S. Naval Academy’s new Uriah P. Levy Chapel.

Lubetkin Global Communications is pleased to be producing video podcasts from many of the Center’s lectures this year. The productions continue a collaboration that dates back nearly 40 years between Steve Lubetkin and the Center’s director, Prof. Paul Zigo. As a student broadcaster at Monmouth College in the 1970s, Steve provided production support to Paul’s weekly radio program, “Speaking of Monmouth.”

This program series is seeking corporate sponsorship support, either for individual programs in the series or as a presenting sponsor for the entire lecture schedule. More information is available in this PDF document, Lubetkin Global Communications – Brookdale Center for World War II Studies Podcast Sponsorship Opportunities – 2012 Spring Series

Why do any firms think direct mail is a good idea any more? With so much of the purchasing decision being crowd-sourced by people getting opinions online, you have to wonder why anyone spends a dime on sending out direct mail to a huge target market of disinterested people.

Yeah, I know that they only need a small percentage of responses to be happy. But the advertisers paying for direct mail advertising need to pay better attention to the lists that direct mail companies are using when they send stuff out.

Here’s exhibit A:

My mom lives in an assisted living retirement community. This direct mailpiece was delivered to her mailbox, and to the other 40 mailboxes in the complex.

No one who received this mailing has any interest in roofing, siding, or windows. The retirement facility handles all exterior maintenance.

Now, multiply the number of people who received this useless mailing in the one facility by the number of people in other similar facilities who also received it. And Cambridge Exteriors LLC paid plenty for the privilege of adding to the trash output at these nursing homes — and got no business from it at all, nor would they ever. Why didn’t their direct mail firm consider this when they generated the mailing?

The point is, throwing a ton of direct mail against a dubious mailing list is a waste of time and it is expensive too. I called Cambridge Exteriors to alert them to the wasted direct mail. They never called me back.

You are much better off creating targeted content in written, audio, video, and photographic form, and surrounding it with the right keywords and data, and getting up on the web in a search environment where people who have roofs, siding, and windows of their own will find you.

Direct mail companies, improperly supervised by clients, will waste your money dropping your direct mail pieces on people who have no interest whatsoever in your products. But you will get charged for it.

Lauren manages NEFE’s consumer-focused site, Spendster.org, where people can post videos describing impulse buys, regretful purchases, or stuff they never use, and answer the question, “Why did I buy this?” In the process, the site helps people learn more about making better choices with their money the next time they made a purchase. The whole site serves as a light-hearted way of accomplishing NEFE’s ultimate goal of behavior change in consumers. You can read more about the winning NEFE entry on the SNCR website. The state’s draft Energy Master Plan envisions it playing a crucial role in the state’s future, as long as New Jersey’s gas infrastructure is expanded to take advantage of new supplies in the Marcellus Shale. Is that too much reliance on a fossil fuel, a dependence that will thwart efforts to achieve the state’s ambitious greenhouse gas reduction goal?
